Enchanting Victoria By-the-Sea

Victoria By-the-Sea will woo you with its candy-coloured homes, some topped with widow walks that whisper stories of the village’s seafaring history. This storybook coastal gem on Prince Edward Island’s Red Sands Shore is brimming with character, good food, local artistry, and a mystical pull that lingers after you leave. Shop, eat, stay, and play.

Pretty as a Postcard

Tucked between Charlottetown and Summerside. I first discovered this pretty-as-a-postcard charming village back in 2006, and return whenever I get the chance.

The Candlemaker

It all began with a photo. In 2006, candlemaker Ben Smith, and his shop were featured on the cover of the PEI Tourism Guide. The accompanying article painted a picture I couldn’t resist. I followed that story straight to Ben’s door, and into what has since become my favourite hidden gem on the island.

Ben is passionate about both candle making and his beloved village. He also has stories to tell—just ask him about the special chair in his shop.

Sand Candles

The blue candle Ben is working on in the featured photo was made just for me. While he’s since passed the torch to his daughter, Ben still finishes each piece with a signature top flourish. “It's not nearly complete without this,” he smiled.

Treasured Memory

Each candle is a work of art–hot wax fused with red sand from nearby shores, hand-carved with wave patterns or personalized designed. Couples often commission custom wedding or anniversary pieces with their names and special dates added. Ben ships them all over the world. No two are alike, and each is a treasured memory of the island. 💙

A Lighthouse Steeped in History

Right across from the candle shop is the Victoria Seaport Lighthouse, built in 1879. It’s the second oldest lighthouse on the island and a beacon of the village’s rich maritime past. Inside, the Seaport Museum offers a glimpse into Victoria’s heyday as one of PEI's busiest ports, when schooners and steamboats regularly came to call. Ben advised me to walk up the entrance ramp slowly so I wouldn’t miss the scent of the wild roses growing nearby. He was right. Take time to smell the roses.

Coach House Antiques

Coach House Antiques is a treasure trove of vintage finds: fine china, Persian rugs, old books, paintings, and antique wood furniture that tell their own stories. I often lose track of time flipping through poetry or rereading classic editions of Anne of Green Gables, by the island's own L.M. Montgomery.

Artists & Artisans

Local creativity shines in every corner of Victoria. Potter Michael Stanley, once told me that most artists here spend the winter months preparing for the lively spring-to-fall season. Each studio and shop offers something distinct, so take your time to visit them all. You’ll find ceramics, textiles, glasswork, jewelry, paintings, and keepsakes crafted with care.

Island Chocolates

Chocolate lovers consider yourself warmed—this one is irresistible.

Island Chocolates offers hand-made chocolates paired with locally roasted coffee or specialty teas, best enjoyed on the sun-dappled deck. Don’t miss the Factory Coffee: a Belgian chocolate-lined glass filled with hot freshly-brewed coffee and topped with real whipped cream. It’s an indulgent hug in a mug.

The Grand Victorian

In search of a dreamy wedding venue? Your prayers are answered! Built in 1877, this former Gothic Revival church has been beautifully restored and reimagined as The Grand Victorian, a boutique venue for weddings and special events. It’s a heavenly place to say, “I do,” complete with full-service offerings and timeless charm.

Victoria Playhouse

Victoria is home to PEI's longest running little theatre. The Victoria Playhouse Theatre hosts a vibrant Summer Festival with comedy, drama, concerts, and storytelling events. Islanders and visitors alike flock here year after year.

Take Your Time

Walk slowly and carry a camera. Victoria is a photographer’s dream. Then hop in your car and meander through the countryside. You may come across fields of canola, potato blossoms, or wild lupines in bloom. Pick berries, gather seaglass or chase a sunset. Be warned: Victoria By-the-Sea has a way of working its magic.

Where to Eat

  • The Lobster Barn & Eatery - My husband Eric and I are convinced this is the best lobster roll on the island. The lobster mango salad is also a favourite.

  • Landmark Oyster House - Located across from the Playhouse, this spot serves up fresh local fare in a lively setting. They’re oyster-shucking pros, and their menu never disappoints.

There are several other dining options, so chat with locals, check online for the latest, and let your appetite guide you.
