Mangata Mactaquac

Finding Your Own Oasis of the Trees in New Brunswick

Welcome to Mangata Mactaquac and Oasis of the Trees.

It was my home away from home for two nights in late May - early June. The first night my husband, Eric, joined me. The second night, my good friend Julie arrived. In many ways, I enjoyed two mini-vacations with two of my favourite people, and the timing couldn’t have been better.

There are places that invite you to slow down the moment you arrive, and this is one of them. I’ve spent a lot of time on the road recently, but this particular escape felt different. It felt like coming home.

Tucked beneath towering pines alongside a babbling brook, Oasis of the Trees feels like a hidden woodland retreat where nature quietly takes the lead. The soothing sound of flowing water follows you throughout the property, creating the kind of peace that’s increasingly difficult to find in everyday life.

Inside, soaring ceilings, warm wood finishes, a cozy loft, and thoughtful décor create an inviting retreat, while outside, a private picnic table, fire pit and a wood-fired hot tub encourage you to slow down, reconnect, and simply enjoy the moment.

A Warm Welcome and Thoughtful Comforts

Owner Ryan Kelly has created more than a collection of cabins. He’s created a destination with a genuine “come stay awhile” atmosphere.

Mangata Mactaquac currently features six unique accommodations:

  • Oasis of the Trees

  • Cabin on the Falls

  • The Lazy Maple

  • The Owl’s Nest

  • The Cozy Triangle

  • Creekside Haven

The attention to detail begins the moment you arrive. A welcoming chalkboard message greeted me, complete with Wi-Fi information. A thoughtful gift bag featuring local coffee sat waiting on the table. It’s Maritime hospitality at its finest.

Ryan and I first partnered in the spring of 2024 when Eric and I enjoyed a stay at Cabin on the Falls. Then, as now, I was reminded how beautifully Mangata balances modern design with timeless comfort. The black-and-wood aesthetic feels both contemporary and cozy. Add in the modern amenities, plants, blankets, soft lighting, and carefully curated and comfortable furnishings, and you’ve created a space that appeals equally to design lovers and nature enthusiasts.

Eric appreciates the uncluttered simplicity. I love how the interiors still feel connected to the outdoors. Even after stepping inside, you’re never separated from the forest that surrounds you.

The comfortable bed, well-stocked kitchen, modern appliances, and beautiful shower made it easy to settle in and feel completely at home.

Hakuna Mangata: The Art of Doing Nothing

Ryan encourages guests to use the hashtag #HakunaMangata when sharing their stay online. It’s clever. It’s memorable. And it perfectly captures the spirit of the experience since you have “no worries" whatsoever the minute you walk in the door.

He’s thought of everything (and then some)—board games, a guitar, and even a universal charger with multiple connectors if you forget yours, like I did. It’s these thoughtful touches that elevate a stay from good to memorable. You literally are worry-free here.

The privacy surrounding each cabin is exceptional. Once settled in, it feels as though you’ve entered your own secluded world filled with birdsong, rustling leaves, scampering chipmunks, curious squirrels, and the constant soundtrack of flowing water.

While browsing through the guest books, I noticed entries from visitors who had travelled from around the globe alongside locals who lived less than 20 minutes away.

Many guests return year after year. Some visit for anniversaries. Others celebrate honeymoons, Christmas holidays, birthdays, or New Year’s getaways. A book club has even made Mangata part of its annual tradition, reserving multiple cabins for a shared retreat.

Ryan told me that guests arrive from across Atlantic Canada, Ontario, Quebec, and throughout the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. Visitors have even travelled from Europe, Japan, and Australia to experience this special corner of New Brunswick. His cabins average an impressive 275 to 300 booked nights annually.

What keeps people coming back? The answer seems remarkably simple. Nature. Connection. Stillness.

Many guests arrive with ambitious itineraries only to discover they don’t want to leave the brook-side chair they’ve settled into.

And honestly, I understand completely.

Brookside Magic, Hot Tubs and Lofty Dreams

One of my favourite views was from the loft overlooking the cabin below. Tucked beneath the rafters made for sweet dreams, too.

As evening settled in, twinkling string lights illuminated the forest outside while the brook continued its gentle song beneath the stars. The private wood-fired hot tub quickly became a highlight of the stay. After all, who can’t relax when soaking beneath towering trees and listening to moving water nearby?

The outdoor fire pit offered another perfect gathering place. Whether roasting marshmallows, making s’mores, or simply enjoying a crackling fire beneath the night sky, it encourages conversation and connection.

The newest addition to Mangata Mactaquac may be its most enchanting. With floor-to-ceiling views of the brook and forest beyond, this glass-front sauna offers a front-row seat to nature’s daily performance. Julie and I spent some quality time watching a robin flit between branches and a squirrel scamper along the water’s edge–a reminder that sometimes the best entertainment is simply slowing down long enough to notice what’s already there.

Dining and Convenience Just Minutes Away

One of the great perks of a getaway here is not having to plan, pack, and cook every meal. It’s nice knowing a good meal and a cold drink are just a short drive away.

Less than ten minutes from Mangata, Big Axe Alehouse & Grill overlooks the golf course in Mactaquac Provinical Park and offers friendly service, hearty meals, local craft beer, and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to enjoy lunch or dinner after a day spent exploring the trails or playing 18 holes.

Also nearby is Fen’s Market, a convenient stop with a gas station, ANBL Agency Store, M & M Food Market, Robin’s Donuts, and Pizza Shack all in one location. It’s easy to stock up on supplies or grab a quick bite without venturing far from your woodland retreat.

Sometimes it’s the little conveniences that make a stay even more enjoyable, and having both of these businesses less than ten minutes away is definitely one of them.

The Story Behind Mangata

The name itself carries a beautiful meaning. “Mångata” is a Swedish word describing the shimmering, road-like reflection created by moonlight dancing across water. Ryan grew up along the river and immediately connected with the imagery. It’s a fitting name for a property so deeply shaped by water.

Every cabin placement was carefully considered during development. Trees were preserved wherever possible. Building angles were chosen to protect root systems, maximize privacy, and showcase the natural beauty of the brook.

Ryan explained that they studied water flow, listened to the sounds of the stream, considered elevations, and intentionally preserved the best trees on the property. Nothing here feels accidental. Every decision reflects a commitment to enhancing the guest experience while respecting the landscape itself.

Exploring Mactaquac Provincial Park and New Brunswick Adventures

As wonderful as the cabins are, the experience extends far beyond your front porch. Mangata Mactaquac sits on 27 forested acres bordering Mactaquac Provincial Park, providing guests with direct access to more than 30 kilometres of hiking and biking trails.

The trail network is one of the property’s greatest assets. Ryan says thousands of guests use the trails every year, and dog owners especially love exploring them. The brook is a favourite spot for four-legged visitors, and the combination of forest, water, wildlife, and fresh air makes it easy to understand why.

In warmer months, guests can hike, bike, birdwatch, paddle nearby waterways, golf, swim, fish, or spend time at Mactaquac’s beach and marina.

Winter transforms the region into an outdoor playground featuring a forest skate, pond skating, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, sledding, and fat biking. Ryan even provides snowshoes for guests to borrow.

The location also makes Mangata an ideal hub for exploring New Brunswick.

Within easy driving distance, visitors can discover:

  • Downtown Fredericton and its renowned farmers’ markets

  • Kings Landing Historical Settlement

  • Woolastoq Park

  • The Fredericton Capital Region’s extensive paddling network

  • Minto’s growing mountain biking trails

  • St. Andrews By-the-Sea and its famous whale watching excursions

  • St. Martins Sea Caves

  • Fundy Trail Provincial Park

  • Hopewell Rocks

  • The Bay of Fundy coastline

  • Crabbe Mountain Ski Resort

  • Apple orchards, pumpkin patches and fall foliage in autumn

Many travellers heading to Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island choose Mangata as a multi-day stopover, often returning again on their journey home.

Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, the location offers the flexibility to do as much—or as little—as you’d like.

A Business Built on Relationships

One thing that stood out during my conversations with Ryan was his focus on relationships rather than transactions. His goal isn’t simply to fill cabins. His goal is to create experiences that guests want to repeat over and over again. If something isn’t right, he addresses it immediately. If improvements can be made, he makes them.

His father, now retired, still helps around the property regularly. His sister Kate assists with social media and marketing efforts. Together, they’ve built a family-run business that continues evolving while maintaining its personal touch.

Even now, Ryan is planning improvements, including a visitor information hub that will showcase local businesses, nearby attractions, trail maps, and day-trip ideas.

His philosophy seems simple: Give guests one more reason to return. And then another.

As Ryan told me, “My goal isn’t your stay today. My goal is that you love it so much you’ll come back again and again and tell your family and friends about it.”

Why Guests Return Again and Again

When I asked Ryan what has surprised him most since opening Mangata, his answer wasn’t about occupancy rates or business growth. It was the people. The travellers arriving from all corners of the globe. The repeat visitors returning several times each year. The countless guests who tell him they’ve finally been able to disconnect from the stress of daily life. That sentiment appears again and again throughout the guest books.

People arrive carrying busy schedules, endless notifications, and overflowing to-do lists. Then they sit beside the brook. They listen to birdsong. They watch the water flow. And somewhere along the way, they exhale. For many, it’s the first time in a very long time that they’ve truly disconnected.

Some escapes are about seeing more. Mangata Mactaquac is about feeling more. Feeling more connected to nature. More present with the people you love. More rested. More grounded. More yourself.

As I packed up to leave Oasis of the Trees, I found myself already imagining a return visit. After reading countless guest comments about winter stays, snow-covered forests, and hot tubs enjoyed beneath falling snowflakes, I think a winter Hakuna Mangata experience may need to be next on my list.

Until then, I’ll hold onto the memory of flowing water, towering pines, twinkling lights, and two wonderful days spent exactly where I needed to be.
