Down East Comfort B&B: A Welcoming Heritage Stay in Miramichi, New Brunswick

The first time my husband Eric and I stayed at Down East Comfort Bed & Breakfast, we were looking for a summer weekend escape. We enjoyed it so much that a few months later, I returned with my friend Sylvie for a very different kind of getaway: a little creative retreat. How’s that for an endorsement?

Housed in a grand 1904 Queen Anne-style home on Pleasant Street in Miramichi, Down East Comfort is the creation of Natasha and Larry Fulton, who returned to the East Coast and turned a longtime dream into a welcoming B & B filled with history, personality and plenty of thoughtful touches. And I can tell you from experience, the breakfasts aren’t bad either.

A Yellow House and a Down East Dream

Before it became the Down East Comfort, this was simply the yellow house Natasha couldn’t stop thinking about. During visits to Larry’s family, Natasha would beg Larry to drive past 125 Pleasant Street in Miramichi, “Please drive by my yellow house.” She had dreamed of owning a bed and breakfast for years, and somewhere along the way, the dream became Larry’s, too. When the house eventually came up for sale in 2019, they decided it was time to go Down East.

The couple bought the property, lovingly restored it and opened Down East Comfort Bed & Breakfast on July 1, 2020. The name couldn’t be more fitting. Natasha’s parents are from Newfoundland and Labrador, Larry’s family is from Nova Scotia, and both have deep East Coast roots. Natasha was born in New Brunswick but grew up in Newfoundland, while Larry was born in Prince Edward Island and grew up in New Brunswick.

Today, the three suites in the main house celebrate New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. In 2025, the Fulton’s added a Newfoundland and Labrador Guest House, bringing another chapter of their East Coast story into the mix. It’s a lovely story, but what I particularly enjoy is that the house doesn’t feel like a carefully preserved piece of history that you’re afraid to touch. It feels like someone’s home. And Natasha and Larry want you to feel at home in it.

A Miramichi Heritage Home with a Story to Tell

Down East Comfort sits among a collection of prominent early-20th-century homes in the Newcastle area of Miramichi. Built in 1903 by the Miller family, the Queen Anne-style house later became associated with the Creaghan family and is locally known as the Creaghan house. Its distinctive architecture includes a turret, tower, wraparound porch and stained-glass windows.

Inside, the historic character continues. Oak inlaid hardwood floors, stained-glass windows, high ceilings, decorative moldings and cornices, an original fireplace with cast-iron panels and a brass lamppost-style stairway are among the details that caught my eye. Then there is the chandelier. The living room chandelier once graced the former Parliament building in Fredericton, giving an already impressive room another little piece of New Brunswick history.

And don’t leave without asking Natasha or Larry about the home’s electricity story. The property is said to have been the first home in the Miramichi region to have electricity. There is even a special light fixture connected to that history. The result is a house with plenty to look at, but it never feels like you’re staying in a museum. It feels like a very beautiful home.

The New Brunswick Suite

On our first visit, Eric and I stayed in the New Brunswick Suite, and it was an easy choice for a romantic weekend. The largest of the three main-house suites occupies the southwest side of the second floor and extends into the round turret, giving it a wonderful sense of space.

The king-size four-poster bed immediately sets the tone. There is also a loveseat, dining table for two that doubles as a workspace, 42-inch television and walk-in closet.

But my favourite part was the bathroom. The private ensuite has both a separate shower and an elegant clawfoot tub, along with a bidet. After a day exploring Miramichi, sinking into that tub was a pretty lovely way to end the evening.

The Nova Scotia Suite

The north-facing Nova Scotia Suite is bright, spacious and designed for up to four guests, making it a practical choice for friends or a small family. It features a king-size bed, loveseat sofa bed, dining table for two, television and private ensuite with both a shower and clawfoot tub.

Like the New Brunswick Suite, it balances historic character with the conveniences you want after a day of exploring. I discovered this room on my second visit, when Sylvie and I returned for our creative getaway. And yes, I had a little trouble deciding later which suite I liked best.

The Prince Edward Island Suite

Tucked into the northeast corner’s square turret, the Prince Edward Island Suite is the coziest of the three main-house rooms. It has a queen-size bed, twin daybed for a third guest, electric fireplace, television and private ensuite with a walk-in shower.

The three suites are individually styled around their namesake provinces, with provincial tartans and East Coast-inspired details woven throughout the décor.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Guest House

The newest accommodation at Down East Comfort gives guests an entirely different option. The Newfoundland and Labrador Guest House is a self-contained two-bedroom apartment with its own entrance, living room, full kitchen and bathroom. It accommodates up to four people and is particularly well suited to families, friends travelling together or guests planning a longer stay.

Breakfast can be added to the reservation and enjoyed at the main house, just a short stroll away. I love this addition because it expands the experience beyond the traditional B&B stay. You can have the independence of your own apartment while still having the option of enjoying Natasha and Larry’s famous breakfast.

And the Newfoundland and Labrador theme completes the family’s East Coast story beautifully.

Come Hungry: Breakfast at Down East Comfort

Breakfast isn’t an afterthought here. It is one of the reasons guests talk about their stay. The menu changes, but the inspiration remains distinctly East Coast. Expect dishes such as Eggs Benedict, smoked salmon, fish cakes, stuffed French toast and traditional bacon and eggs, along with fresh fruit or yogurt, coffee, tea, juice and a homemade or locally sourced sweet. Dietary needs can also be discussed with the hosts in advance.

During our first stay, Eric and I started with fresh juice, coffee and a fruit-and-yogurt parfait before moving on to warm waffles topped with fresh berries, whipped cream and maple syrup. There were pastries, too. We simply couldn’t manage them.

The next morning brought another parfait, followed by Traditional Eggs Benedict for Eric and Smoked Salmon Eggs Benny for me, accompanied by bacon-wrapped broccoli and mini potatoes. Then came freshly baked croissants topped with shavings of local Chocolat Voyageur chocolate. I was already full, but naturally I found room for a little taste.

Natasha’s dad, Ivan, kindly wrapped the remaining croissants for us to take along for the drive home. A few hours later, that little package turned into a very welcome road-trip treat. That is Down East Comfort in a nutshell: breakfast is delicious, but the experience surrounding it is what sticks with you. And I’m not the only one saying so. Guests rave about their stay here and many single out the breakfasts as a highlight, describing them as excellent, filling and beautifully prepared.

It Really Is the Little Things

The phrase “attention to detail” gets tossed around a lot in hospitality. Here, I noticed it. Custom room keys. Quality bedding and towels. Private refrigerators. Local treats. A coffee and tea station. Refillable water. Evening snacks. A comfortable upstairs sitting area. A “Date with a Book” basket. And those little extras you appreciate when you discover you’ve forgotten something.

There are personal touches throughout the house, too. Natasha’s mom created the cross-stitched provincial tartans displayed in the guest area. A painting by New Brunswick artist Catherine Karnes Munn adds another local connection. Then there is the verandah. With its plants, comfortable seating and welcoming atmosphere, it quickly became one of our favourite places to sit at the end of the day.

Pre-stamped postcards and provincial tartan mug mats become small keepsakes of your stay. None of these things on their own would make or break a B&B. Together, they tell you that someone has thought about how you will experience this place.

And Then There Are Natasha, Larry, Ivan and Joanne

You can have a beautiful heritage house and beautifully decorated rooms, but what makes a B&B memorable is usually the people. Natasha and Larry are genuinely interested in their guests. They want you to enjoy the house, but they also want you to experience Miramichi. Their hospitality extends to Natasha’s parents, Ivan and Joanne, who are part of the Down East Comfort family experience from time to time. Ivan’s easygoing humour and Joanne’s gracious nature added another layer of warmth to our stay. It is easy to see how much Natasha values their support.

And that personal connection is echoed in guest reviews. One recent Tripadvisor guest wrote that the owners were “amazing, friendly, and fun,” while another said they were treated “like royalty” from arrival to departure. That may sound like a lofty claim. But having stayed here twice, I understand it.

Why Guests Come Back

On our final morning during our first stay, Eric and I met a woman who was visiting Miramichi from Halifax to see her mother in a nearby nursing home. She told us she stays at Down East Comfort regularly. In fact, she wouldn’t consider staying anywhere else, even if it meant waiting for a room to become available. That stayed with me. So did the comment from Natasha’s dad, who said, “That makes us feel pretty good.” It should.

Recent online reviews tell a similar story. Although Down East Comfort has only a small number of Tripadvisor reviews at present, they are remarkably consistent: guests praise the cleanliness, spacious rooms, décor, breakfast, comfortable beds and, most of all, the personal service. At the time of writing, Tripadvisor shows a 5.0 rating from its published reviews.

Of course, a handful of reviews is not enough to make sweeping claims about every guest’s experience. But when those reviews echo what I experienced personally, I pay attention.

A Creative Getaway in Miramichi

My first stay planted the seed for my second. I loved Down East Comfort so much that later that autumn I returned with my friend Sylvie for a little creative getaway. We weren’t looking for a conference room or a formal retreat centre. We wanted somewhere comfortable where we could spread out, talk, brainstorm, work on our ideas and take a break when our brains needed one. Down East Comfort fit beautifully.

Mornings began with breakfast and conversation before we settled into our work. When we needed a change of scenery, we headed out to explore Miramichi. We wandered around nearby Queen Elizabeth Park, discovered charming shops and gave ourselves permission to put the notebooks away for a while. That balance was exactly what we needed.

And yes, Chef Larry once again delivered breakfast, including a version tailored to Sylvie’s gluten-free dietary needs and allergies. It was a very good way to start the day.

By evening, I had the Nova Scotia Suite to retreat to. And that’s when I realized I had a new dilemma. I still hadn’t tried the Prince Edward Island Suite. Perhaps I’ll have to come back. Or perhaps I’ll bring my family and book the Newfoundland and Labrador Guest House. I’m not ruling either option out.

A B&B That Feels Like Part of the Miramichi Experience

One of the advantages of staying at Down East Comfort is its location. The house is within walking distance of the Miramichi River, downtown Newcastle’s shopping district, restaurants and pubs, Ritchie Wharf and the Strawberry Marsh Conservation Area. French Fort Cove, Middle Island and Beaubears Island are among the attractions a short drive away, while the area is also well known for salmon and fly fishing, golf and winter activities. That makes the B&B more than simply a place to sleep. It is a comfortable home base for exploring Miramichi. And after a day on the river, walking through the historic downtown, visiting an attraction or simply seeing where the road takes you, it is awfully nice to come back to a place where someone knows your name.

Book Your Stay at Down East Comfort B&B

After two stays, I can tell you this much: Down East Comfort isn’t simply a beautiful place to spend the night. It is the combination of the house, the history, the food and the people that makes it memorable. The Queen Anne architecture gives you plenty to admire. The themed suites make choosing a room part of the fun. Breakfast gives you something delicious to look forward to each morning. And Natasha, Larry and their family give the place its heart.

Down East Comfort also offers special arrangements for celebrations and other occasions, along with options such as guided history and fishing experiences. Current policies and offerings can change, so check directly with the B&B when planning your stay.
